They wanted out of downtown. In the early 1920s, Columbus was booming with textile mill money and a rapidly expanding military presence at nearby Fort Benning, which drove wealthy residents to seek cooler, quieter high ground away from the industrial noise of the Chattahoochee River. The developers ditched the boring grid system of old Columbus for winding, topography-following streets. No straight lines here. Instead, the neighborhood looped around Wildwood Circle, creating deep, shaded lots filled with mature oaks.

The houses tell the story. You won't find a single dominant style, but rather a catalog of early twentieth-century American suburban tastes. Heavy stone-and-timber Craftsman bungalows from the 1920s sit directly beside steep-gabled Tudor Revival cottages, showing how quickly architectural trends shifted as the Great Depression forced builders to scale down their grander designs. Ranch houses came later. So, the whole loop became a living archive of changing middle-class tastes. It is not a museum. People still live in these homes, paint the porches, and drive these curved roads every day, keeping the 1920s suburbia alive without freezing it in amber.
