She ruled the stage. Polish coloratura soprano Marcella Sembrich dominated the Metropolitan Opera for over two decades, singing alongside Enrico Caruso and commanding fees that would make modern pop stars blush. She needed an escape. So, in 1922, she bought a pine-shaded point on Lake George in Bolton Landing, New York, raising a pink stucco teaching studio there two years later. It still stands today. Stepping inside feels like interrupting a 1920s masterclass, with her Steinway grand piano sitting exactly where she left it.

This wasn't a lazy vacation home. Actually, Sembrich ran a relentless summer music academy here, whipping elite vocal pupils from the Curtis Institute and Juilliard into operatic shape. She scattered her students into tiny, isolated cabins across the shoreline so their daily vocalizing wouldn't clash. The main studio holds her personal archives. Think hand-annotated scores, autographed photos from Johannes Brahms, and heavy velvet costumes she wore on global tours.

She died in 1935. Two years later, her student association turned the studio into a public museum, saving it from the redevelopment that swallowed up most of Lake George's Gilded Age estates. It remains the only intact physical site dedicated to her legacy in the United States. The National Register recognized this in 2002. Now, visitors can still walk down the gravel path, sit by the water, and hear classical music floating out of the open French doors. It's a living time capsule.
