United States Post Office--Chicago National Register of Historic Places Listing

It is absolutely gargantuan. Step inside the Old Chicago Main Post Office at 433 West Van Buren, and you quickly realize that mid-century postal workers didn't just sort mail they managed an industrial empire. Completed in 1932 by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, this Art Deco monster spans nine city blocks. Chicago was the mail-order capital of the world back then. Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Montgomery Ward flooded the nation with catalogs, so the city needed a facility that could process 35 million letters and packages every single day. They built a behemoth with its own internal railway system. So, coal trains dumped fuel directly into the basement to keep the heaters roaring.

But the craziest part of the design is the highway. Engineers knew the city planned to build a major expressway westward, so they literally left a giant hole right through the building's base. Today, the Eisenhower Expressway cuts straight through the structure. Commuters drive right under the lobby. By the late 20th century, though, the postal service abandoned the giant because modern, automated sorting machines required massive, single-story warehouses rather than multi-story vertical towers. The building sat vacant for over two decades, transforming from a bustling hub into a silent, dust-covered cavern of broken glass and peeling paint. A giant white elephant. Then, developers stepped in with a billions-of-dollars rescue plan.

The National Register listing in 2001 didn't just honor the building's limestone exterior it saved it from the wrecking ball. The designation made massive federal tax credits possible, paving the way for a stunning tech-hub renovation. Now, companies like Walgreens and Uber occupy the former mailrooms. The giant lives on. It's a survivor. But if you look closely at the lobby's brass fittings and marble floors, you can still feel the frantic energy of millions of packages rushing to rural mailboxes a century ago.
