It looked like an ordinary house. But behind the neat brick facade at 1108 West Stoughton Street in Urbana, researchers in 1924 rigged up a bizarre labyrinth of over 200 temperature-sensing thermocouples, miles of copper wiring, and heavy recording instruments. They wanted to stop guessing. Before the National Warm Air Heating and Ventilating Association teamed up with University of Illinois engineers, heating a home was mostly trial and error. And highly inefficient. This built-to-scale laboratory changed that by testing gravity-flow and forced-air systems under harsh Midwestern winters.

An actual family lived inside. This mattered because human bodies, cooking stoves, and open doors constantly altered the indoor drafts. While the residents went about their daily lives, Professor Arthur Willard's team huddled in the basement to measure exactly how drafty windows and plaster walls absorbed or rejected heat. They gathered data on coal consumption, flue gas temperatures, and air velocity. So, what did they actually discover They proved that forced-air systems could distribute heat evenly, preventing the classic old-house problem of a roasting parlor and a freezing bedroom.

Most historic structures get saved because someone famous slept there or the woodwork is pretty. This one got saved because of ductwork. It is actually a tribute to the unseen mechanics of modern comfort that we take for granted every time we flip a thermostat. When the federal government listed the property in 2001, they recognized how these Urbana experiments changed daily life. No more shivering by a single cast-iron parlor stove. Just clean, reliable warmth controlled by the turn of a dial.
