WJ's Insight:
In 1907, the Philadelphia Toboggan Company rolled out Carousel Number 15. It was a masterpiece. Carvers like Salvatore Cernigliaro spent weeks chiseling basswood and maple to create the signature jumping horses. They added elaborate saddles and real horsehair tails. It didn't start in Bear Mountain, though. First, it spun at Columbia Park in New Jersey. Then, it moved to Indian Point Park in New York before finally landing at Bear Mountain State Park in 1948. By then, it had survived decades of grease, screaming kids, and the damp Hudson River air.
Inside the heavy stone pavilion at Bear Mountain, the carousel became a local legend. But time ruins everything. Rotting wood and peeling lead paint threatened to mothball the whole machine. So, the state stepped in. During a massive restoration project in the early 2000s, artisans didn't just paint over the old grime. They rebuilt the platform, restored 33 of the original hand-carved jumping horses, and introduced hand-carved native Hudson Valley animals to the mix. Think black bears, wild turkeys, and foxes instead of just traditional stallions. This wasn't some cheap fiberglass replica. It was heavy, smelling of pine and gear oil. The federal government took notice, adding Carousel Number 15 to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Why Because it represents one of the few surviving examples of the "Philadelphia School" of carousel carving left in the wild.
Today, the machine still runs. You can hear the Wurlitzer 153 band organ from across the park. It pumps out loud, reedy waltzes that drown out the chatter of the crowds. Children clutch the brass poles while parents watch from the side, remembering when they rode the very same wooden mounts. It is living history you can actually smell and touch. Not locked behind glass. Just pure, spinning nostalgia.
