Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District (Boundary Increase) National Register of Historic Places Listing

In 2001, preservationists realized the original map of Atlanta's Sweet Auburn neighborhood did not tell the whole story. It ignored the everyday folks. So, they pushed through the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District Boundary Increase. This expansion saved more than just grand brick churches or King's birth home. It prioritized working-class spaces. We are talking about wooden shotgun houses on dusty side streets where the real foot soldiers of the movement lived. They marched. They also funded the struggle with their pocket change. Without their dimes, the civil rights movement would have stalled.

The expansion added dozens of structures dating from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Walk these blocks. You immediately notice the wild contrast between Queen Anne mansions and drafty double-shotgun duplexes. It shows how segregated Atlanta functioned. Black doctors lived right next to streetcar conductors because Jim Crow left them no other choice. This density bred a self-sustaining city within a city. King did not rebel alone. He had a whole community at his back.
