Herschell, Allan, 3-Abreast Carousel National Register of Historic Places Listing

Allan Herschell did not just build amusement rides he engineered kinetic art for the masses. In 1916, his North Tonawanda workshop cranked out this specific three-abreast masterpiece, a marvel of timber and gears. It features 35 hand-carved wooden jumpers and two chariots. Most carousels of this era succumbed to rot, fire, or the wrecking ball. This one survived. It represents the "country fair" style, designed for quick assembly and travel. The horses look alive. Their heads toss, their nostrils flare, and their glass eyes catch the light. It is pure Americana on a rotating platform.

Santa Barbara acquired the machine in 1999, placing it under a protective pavilion in Chase Palm Park. It became a local obsession. But its national significance lies in its incredible rarity. It is one of only a handful of intact, operating wooden carousels from the early twentieth century still left in the United States. It runs on a center pole mechanism that dates back over a century. You can hear the gears groan under the music. Even though the city eventually sold the carousel to a private preservationist in 2017 due to high maintenance costs, its spot on the National Register remains a marker of its engineering genius.
